Biography
My primary area of interest is in perinatal pathology, particularly surgical pathology of the placenta. I have been a pathologist at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center for over 30 years, and l became the Associate Director of Obstetric and Perinatal Pathology at Hutzel Women's Hospital in 1993. I have also worked in support of the Perinatology Research Branch, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health (NICHD/NIH). I have microscopically examined tens of thousands of placentas in the course of my career. I participate in all fetal and neonatal autopsies at Hutzel Women’s Hospital, and I have performed over 1000 such autopsies.
My expertise in perinatal pathology allows for involvement in research that may significantly expand the understanding of the maternal-fetal-placental unit, particularly regarding the correlation between placental lesions and pregnancy outcome. In the course of my career, I have published approximately 100 peer-reviewed original observations, case reports, and letters to the editor, the majority of which are in the field of perinatal pathology, including placental pathology and issues related to the fetal autopsy, as well as gynecologic pathology. My research is primarily in placental pathology, including viral and bacterial infections, chronic inflammatory lesions, and placental vascular abnormalities. In cases of adverse pregnancy outcome, the parents and obstetricians frequently have high expectations of the pathologist regarding the resolution of questions and issues about the current pregnancy, as well as questions regarding recurrence in future pregnancies. It has been my privilege to address these questions not only in my practice, but also in my research. Several of my publications have involved unexplained stillbirth in the third trimester of pregnancy, a complex and under-studied problem world-wide. I was also a member of the Amsterdam Placental Workshop Group, an
international group of invited research-active placental pathologists convened in Amsterdam in 2014 to address the need for a consensus-determined protocol for sampling the placenta and collectively agreed upon definitions of placental lesions. The published placental gross descriptors, sampling specifications, pathologic terminologies, and diagnostic criteria represent a much needed systematic scheme, suitable for worldwide implementation and also intended for use by pathologists in general practice to improve the value of their placental pathology and perinatal autopsy reports.

Research
Dr. Jacques interests focus on placental pathology, fetal pathology, and gynecologic pathology. Her research is primarily in placental pathology, including viral and bacterial infections, abnormalities of membrane rupture, and placental vascular abnormalities. Her interests also include fetal congenital anomalies and genetic disorders, with emphasis on diagnosis in the second trimester of pregnancy and correlation with the ultrasound findings. Her research in the area of stillbirth has focused on fetal neuropathological abnormalities and associated placental abnormalities.
